Design is all the same isn’t it?
With what seems like hundreds of so called ‘Graphic Designers’ out there it can be a challenge to avoid a bad one. Well so what I hear you say, Graphic Design is all the same isn’t it? Um, no. Practically speaking consider this, would you compare a Rolls Royce to a Reliant Robin?
Bad design, often cheap can actually lose you customers rather than attract them. Good design evokes emotion and can even create a desire to buy! It’s an example frankly overused but Apple do this remarkably well, credit where credits due.
I’ve got Paintshop Pro!
Having a computer doesn’t make you a graphic designer like owning a paint brush doesn’t make you a Painter and Decorator! Having experience and knowledge is key to a good Graphic Designer. A good understanding of consumer behaviour practically dictates which design principle is used.
Mixing fonts and bad colour palettes are the usual suspects, stretching fonts is another and possibly one of my biggest bug bares! If people can’t read about your business how are they supposed to buy from it?
Trends can change quickly so it’s important to keep up with what’s in and more importantly what is not! Flat design, blurred backgrounds and vintage are in at the moment, drop shadows (with some exceptions), vignettes (again, with exceptions) Roman fonts, COMIC SANS (yuk) and clip art are so definitely OUT!
So how do I find a good graphic designer?
It’s simple, before making any decision be sure to check out their portfolio of work. Then, use Google to see what the world is doing. Pinterest is also a great place to see what’s vogue. Only then should you approach your choice of Graphic Designer.
OK, I’m a Graphic Designer myself so I may be a little bit over sensitive but before you commit your hard earned cash seriously think about the choice you are making, a bad one could seriously damage your business.
